Quick Update

Current state of the search is that my Aunt and Uncle are working on locating their cousins to see if their Aunt Lucille has any family documents. Visited New York on Thanksgiving and spoke to my Uncle Frank about it. He said he would help in locating his cousins. At one time they owned a restaurant in Manhattan but they do not currently know their whereabouts.
So, that is our next step...

  • I used ancestry.com for much of my research, and England has somehow been successful maintaining their documents and making them accessible. I even had my mtDNA tested; however, ancestry.com only gave me the Haplotype and not the subclade (disappointing). I believe it would be the same for Y chromosomes. My father was a British sailor on the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. He fought for England during WWII. All of his voyages are listed on ancestry.com. His father was supposed to be on the Titanic and bailed. His ticket was affixed to my grandmother's kitchen door for many years. I have had NO success with France and Germany, except for what has been passed down thru the family. I presume this lack of information is a result of WWII.
My suggestion: Change this for your children. My mother is the second youngest of 10! After her eldest brother passed, I realized what went with him. So, I asked her siblings to write down what they remembered from growing up in Queens (Aunt Caroline remembered getting electricity and Uncle George (postman) found a lion in someone's backyard when the circus was in town). We now have a 'Family Memories' book. On my husband's side they actually had a family Bible in which they logged each BMD...amazing.
    Good luck with your search.
